Log Book of Vauvert School

When the Germans invaded Guernsey the entire school system was disrupted because most pupils had been evacuated and many school buildings were taken over. When Vauvert  re-opened in 1940 it was no longer a primary school but accommodated the whole age range of the pupils who were left on the island.  At the end of the war, when normal conditions were restored,  Vauvert reverted to being a primary school.  Because the wartime Vauvert was disbanded in 1945 this log book remained in my father’s possession.

Some names have been changed for obvious reasons, and where the ink was so faded that it was barely readable on computer, passages have been typed.

Thanks to modern technologies, scanners and the latest Mobile Broadband, digital touch-ups and the like, life has been breathed into many important old documents. Using the tools to preserve historic archives is superbly efficient. It means that such significant papers will last for generations. They will be easy to file and search for, since they can be stored online. With online data filing systems, and websites such as this, anybody who is interested can access authentic records and log books from all throughout history. This is a wealth, not only for history students, writers and archivists, but for anybody wishing to know more about their home town. All town archives should consider doing the same. It is well worth the investment of time and money. Such historic documents are priceless.

There also exists an Admission Register of the war years which will be archived in Guernsey.
